The University of Oregon is a comprehensive, public research university in Eugene, Oregon, about two hours south of Portland. Founded in 1876, the institution offers a variety of liberal arts, and professional undergraduate and graduate programs.The university is a member of the Association of American Universities, one of two universities of its kind in the greater Northwest. Lundquist College of Business, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Education, School of Journalism and Communications, School of Music and Dance, and the School of Law.The university also maintains the Graduate School and the Robert Donald Clark Honors College. A Carnegie Doctoral/Research Extensive University, it has more than 25 interdisciplinary institutes and centers managed by the vice president for Research and Graduate Studies.The second largest library system in the Pacific Northwest, the University of Oregon carries a wide collection of about 2.6 million volumes and 18,000 periodicals in its two main (Knight Library and Kenneth Lucas Fenton Memorial Law Library) and four branch libraries: the Architecture and Allied Arts Library, Map and Aerial Photography Library, Mathematics Library, and the Science Library.Located in the fertile Willamette Valley, the 295-acre, park-like campus features 60 major buildings. Deady Hall (the oldest building) and Villard Hall are listed as National Historic Landmarks. The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, Museum of Natural and Cultural History, and the Condon Museum of Geology can be found there.Autzen Stadium, venerable McArthur Court, Erb Memorial Student Union building, three performing arts theaters, and a number of residence halls are among other facilities. Off-campus living arrangements include a full compliment of fraternities and sororities, as well as apartments and room rentals.Riverfront Research Park lies adjacent to the main campus, on the south bank of the Willamette River. It is dedicated to promoting technology and to enhancing the economy of the state through its research activities.The University of Oregon has been listed among the top national universities in the state by U.S. News & World Report for its excellence in academics. Further, it supports the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology in Charleston Bay on the Oregon coast, the Malheur Field Station in southeastern Oregon, and the Pine Mountain Observatory in central Oregon.
